(KNSI) — Spring burning restrictions are now in effect for several counties around Minnesota.

The Department of Natural Resources is restricting open burning due to increased wildfire risk from warm temperatures and dry conditions. Residents in Benton, Morrison, Sherburne Stearns, and Wright Counties cannot get permits to burn brush or yard waste until further notice. The DNR will adjust burning restrictions as conditions change.

“Wildfire risk increases each year after the snow melts and before grass greens up,” said Allissa Reynolds, DNR wildfire prevention supervisor. “Spring burning restrictions help to reduce the number of wildfires, especially those caused by debris burning.”

Reynolds encourages composting, chipping, or dropping off brush and yard waste at a collection site versus burning it. The DNR says if a debris fire rekindles or escapes, the person who set it is liable for any damage caused and wildfire suppression costs.
