(KNSI) — Smoke from large wildfires in Canada is blowing into Minnesota, making the air unsafe for some people to breathe, so an air quality alert is being issued for the entire state.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says the air will be in the orange, or unhealthy for sensitive groups, category. This includes anyone with lung problems like asthma, COPD, people with heart disease, children, and older adults. For those in that category, experts say to stay inside when possible and avoid heavy exercise or outdoor activities. Keep windows and doors closed, and use air conditioning on recirculate mode if it’s available.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop, which could help “clean” the atmosphere. Winds are also expected to shift and push that smoke back across the border.
Forecasters warn this won’t be the end, though. Calling it a “long duration event,” wildfire smoke issues may persist through the summer.
