(KNSI) – Ten St. Cloud area car dealerships came together to raise money for a local charity by playing kickball.
About two months ago, Miller Auto Plaza Marketing Manager Andy Mohs said he was talking with a coworker and thought it would be neat to get the local car dealers involved in a charity program and build a little camaraderie amongst the local central Minnesota dealers. And they came up with a kickball tournament. Each team paid $200, and they met on Sunday at the Upper Deck Sports Bar and Grill in Sartell.
Mohs says ten dealerships took part in the kickball event, and they fielded twelve teams.
“In the history of my automotive career, which is pushing 15 years here, I have never ever seen any type of charity program put together where there was more than just a couple dealerships involved. So I do believe that this is a first for a charity program. So, this is absolutely unheard of.”
All the proceeds from the tournament, a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and 15% of sales from that day went to charity. The winner of the tournament was Schwieters Chevrolet of Cold Spring. They will choose who will get the $4,000 raised by the event.
Mohs says they hope to make this a yearly tradition.
“We ordered a traveling trophy. We have 14 plaque spots on the trophies; we’re anticipating it to be an annual tradition. And the turnout was absolutely amazing. Each dealership that participated ended upbringing anywhere from 10 to 15 people per team.”
He’s hoping that they will get 18 teams next year.
The dealerships that took part, along with Miller Auto Plaza and Schwieters, included Gilleland Chevrolet, Tenvoorde Ford, St. Cloud Subaru, St. Cloud Hyundai, St. Cloud Honda, Brandl Motors, Eich Motors, and Kia of St. Cloud.
