(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Fire Department asks people to pay attention to their smoke detectors during National Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.  St. Cloud Assitant Fire Marshal Greg Adamietz says he wants people to learn the sounds a fire alarm makes.

“You know, the single chirp is typically just a low battery or malfunction of the alarm instead of three or four. That means there’s an emergency somewhere.”

He says fire alarms can save your life and the lives of your loved ones.

“The number one thing to have is a fire alarm. Most fatality fires are attributed to no fire alarms or smoke alarms in the building. That’s the one thing that will wake you up in the middle of the night. It’s the one thing that alerts everyone in the residence to a fire.”

Adamietz advises checking your smoke detector once a month and replacing your fire alarms every ten years. He says most fires are caused by cooking, followed by smoking, furnaces, arson, and space heaters. The St. Cloud Fire Department will stop by a couple of schools that reached out to the department, but because of COVID didn’t reach out to the schools themselves, said Adamietz.
