(KNSI) — If packed parades and booming fireworks aren’t your thing, Minnesota’s state parks might be just the escape you need this Fourth of July weekend.

“We encourage everyone to spend time outdoors during Fourth of July weekend,” said Ann Pierce, director of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ Parks and Trails Division. “Minnesota’s state parks offer welcoming places to relax, connect with nature, and celebrate the holiday in a peaceful setting.”

While holiday weekend camping is in high demand, with campgrounds 90% full for July 4th and 5th, determined outdoor enthusiasts still have options. Six state parks maintain availability with 20 or more drive-in sites. They are Lake Bronson, Minneopa, Myre-Big Island, Sakatah Lake, St. Croix, and Zippel Bay. For those needing electrical hookups, Red River State Recreation Area stands as the sole location with multiple sites still available.

All lodging facilities within state parks are completely booked for the holiday nights, making camping the primary overnight option for last-minute planners.

One notable difference that distinguishes state park celebrations from typical Fourth of July festivities is the absence of fireworks. Minnesota regulations prohibit fireworks within state park boundaries, creating an environment where natural sounds take center stage.
