(KNSI) — For many, summer means road trips, weekend getaways, and time with family and friends, but state safety officials are reminding drivers that the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are historically the most dangerous on Minnesota roads.
Law enforcement is stepping up patrols this summer, with a heavy focus on what they call the “Big Four”, or the behaviors behind most crashes: speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and not wearing a seat belt.
Public safety officials say the numbers from last summer tell a grim story. Between May 26th and September 1st, 111 people died on Minnesota roads. Alcohol was a factor in 37 of those deaths. Speeding contributed to 31. Sixteen were not wearing a seat belt. Five crashes involved a distracted driver.
The message from officials is simple: slow down, buckle up, put the phone down, and never drive impaired. The goal is to drive Minnesota toward zero deaths.
