(KNSI) – Ahead of the Memorial Day travel weekend, Stearns County is reminding property owners they must get a license before renting out their space on a short-term basis.
Stearns County requires a lodging license and an interim use permit to rent out properties on popular websites like Airbnb (Air Bed and Breakfast), Home Away and VRBO (Vacation Rental by Owner). A short-term rental is defined as 30 days or less.
The payment of fees and applications does not guarantee approval. The permit involves a public hearing with the county planning commission and a final decision by the county commissioners. The process can cost more than $1,000.
Due to a moratorium in Eden Lake, Maine Prairie, Munson and Wakefield Townships, lodging licenses cannot be issued for new short-term rentals until the moratorium is lifted or ends. Sauk Centre Township does not allow short-term rentals in certain districts.
