(KNSI) – Two people are getting help from the Red Cross after their home in Stearns County sustained extensive damage in a fire.

Firefighters were called to the home at 1908 BayBarry Road in Fairhaven Township around 8:45 on Friday morning.

First responders say the home was nearly engulfed in flames when they arrived. Two people were inside the house when the fire started. Sixty-four-year-old Ricky Pettis and 60-year-old Darwin Pettis were able to get out of the home safely.

Investigators say a propane gas heater was being used in the home to defrost pipes and is believed to be the cause of the fire. Darwin Pettis was evaluated at the scene for possible smoke inhalation.

The Red Cross is assisting both residents with temporary housing.
