(KNSI) – A 24-year-old man is accused of kidnapping a woman and forcing her to drive him around Waite Park and St. Cloud while threatening to kill her.
According to the criminal complaint, the woman returned home from the State Fair on September 5th and found Abdi Mohamed Dakane and a second man, who has not been identified, sitting inside her vehicle. According to court records, Dakane and the victim are family or household members. She told investigators she did not know how they got in, and that Dakane then made her drive them around the area.
The woman had food to drop off at a friend’s house. When they arrived, the complaint says Dakane would not let her out of the car, and hit her on the side of the head when she tried to get her friend’s attention. The friend told law enforcement she saw the assault and tried to get into the vehicle, but Dakane ordered her away.
Dakane allegedly told the woman he had a gun and knives, threatened to kill her, took her phone, and at one point told the other man to kill her.
The group stopped at a Kwik Trip in St. Cloud, where the clerk asked for identification before selling cigars. The complaint says Dakane threatened to kill the clerk and told him “I can shoot you, I already have two bodies.” The clerk reported seeing what looked like a handgun in Dakane’s waistband. Investigators say surveillance video from the store backs up what the woman and the clerk described.
A second friend tracked the vehicle using Life360 and followed it to the gas station, then called police. The complaint says Dakane got out and fled on foot. Officers found him walking in Waite Park the next day with several knives in his backpack.
Dakane is charged in Stearns County District Court with kidnapping, false imprisonment, two counts of threats of violence, and two misdemeanor counts of domestic assault. The kidnapping charge carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.
