(KNSI) — Thousands of homes and businesses were left without power after severe weather swept across the state overnight.
Heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds toppled trees, sending them crashing into power lines. According to Xcel Energy, about 275 crews are currently in the field, with additional teams expected to join this afternoon. Crews are prioritizing downed live wires and repairs that will restore the largest number of customers at once.
Officials say to stay away from downed or sagging power lines and always assume an electric line, even one on the ground, is energized and dangerous. Never touch or move a downed power line; instead, leave the area and report it immediately by calling 1-800-895-1999.
Additional storms are expected this afternoon and could cause further outages.
