(KNSI) – The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office hopes people will consider safety this weekend as they try to beat the heat.

Officials say they are prepared for beaches and boating to be popular choices. Some tips to ensure your time on the water is as risk-free as possible include wearing a life jacket and avoiding reckless behavior while boating. If you are on shore, keep a sharp eye out for your friends, family, and others. Being alert can help you head off dangerous situations.

The department says to limit how much alcohol you drink. While polishing off a longneck bottle of cold beer may feel like the perfect solution to the sun beating down on the back of your neck, science says otherwise. Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it pushes the body to move fluid and salt from your body more quickly than other drinks. Too much alcohol dehydrates you.

Lastly, officials remind you that this summer, heavy rain and high water levels have been the story throughout Minnesota. Rapids are running faster than during the drought of the last few years. The threats affect the Sauk River, too, especially in St. Cloud from Highway 15 to Heims Mill.
