(KNSI) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has set the date for the first of four Free Park Days in 2024.
It will coincide with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday on the 15th. The DNR says it would be great if we finally see some snow after a record-warm December, but the white stuff isn’t necessary to have a blast outdoors in the wintertime.
Vehicle permit fees will be waived so you can enjoy birding, winter hiking, and photography. Gather round the campfire for hot chocolate and s’mores at Lake Maria or 74 other state parks and recreation areas across Minnesota.
And on the off chance we see some snow before then, you will be able to Nordic ski, sled, or snowshoe. Most places have equipment rentals available.
It’s the only Free Park Day until late April. DNR Parks and Trails Division Director Ann Pierce says, “Minnesota state parks and recreation areas are open 365 days per year, but some visitors only visit in summer. We hope having a free day in each season will encourage people to get out and visit a park at a time of year they might not normally visit.”
