(KNSI) – After a record amount of precipitation in December, 2024 is off to a calm start weatherwise.
That means the drought situation is unchanged from a week ago. Locally, Stearns County is in the best shape. Just over a third is back to normal, mostly in the western and southern ends. About 45% is unusually dry, and roughly a fifth, just north of St. Cloud, is in moderate drought.
All of Benton County remains in moderate drought and about 38% of Sherburne County as well, with the rest abnormally dry.
Looking at Minnesota as a whole, about 28% of the state is in a moderate drought, with over 12% in severe and approximately 0.25% in the extreme stage. Severe drought is found mostly from Cass County and the headwaters area to Kittson County along the Canadian border. The extreme drought is limited to southeastern Minnesota in Mower and Fillmore Counties.
The weekly report is accurate through January 2nd at 6:00 a.m.
