(KNSI) – Plans were released Thursday for a new Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum.

The $33 million project includes a 40,000-square-foot facility on 32 acres outside Camp Ripley in Little Falls. The museum has raised more than $18 million. Officials say they hope to open the museum in the spring of 2025.

It will honor all branches of service, both past and present. Displays include a special Post-9/11 Exhibit and the sail and rudder from the famed USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul.

The ship was a nuclear-powered submarine in service between 1984 and 2008. According to a press release, it was the first vessel of the United States Navy to be named for the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Known for the hull classification of SSN-708, the submarine served with distinction in Operation Desert Shield and the First Gulf War. It was the first submarine to carry Tomahawk missiles designated for use in strikes against Iraq.

Anderson Trucking Service in St. Cloud brought the submarine parts to Camp Riley, where the pieces will receive extensive renovation over the next two years.
