(KNSI) – The 4th of July is a week away and experts are reminding pet owners how to keep their four-legged friends from being terrified during fireworks.
Tri-County Humane Society Executive Director Vicki Davis says don’t bring your dog to a fireworks show.
“No it’s never a good thing, really there aren’t any dogs out there that enjoy loud noises, the smell of sulfur, the bright lights and the banging. Maybe when you go down to the park ahead of time you might be having fun with them but once the fireworks start that’s no place for a pet.”
She says the best place for them is home.
“Turn the radio on. Pull the drapes so, they don’t see the lights and hear the noise or if you have a dog that’s already really scared of thunder [or] loud noises, try to interact with them by giving them some new toys.”
She says never throw fireworks when dogs are around because they will chase them and be injured by the explosion. She also stays to talk with your veterinarian before using any tranquilizer or anti-anxiety medication on your pets.
