(KNSI) – The St. Cloud City Council Monday night approved funding for additional School Resource Officers for portions of the upcoming school year.
The item was part of a consent agenda package that authorizes the mayor and city clerk to sign the addendum to the Joint Powers Agreement between St. Cloud Area School District 742 and the City of St. Cloud. The approval allows the police department to add two additional full-time licensed peace officers to serve as School Resource Officers through supplemental funding for salaries, benefits, and transportation costs.
The district will pay the city $92,5000 for the first half of the 2021-2022 school year and $187,500 for the second half of the school year. That payment would be made up of $92,500 for the second half of the school year and $95,000 for the two additional officers. The positions would take effect on January 1st, 2022.
The officers will be in place to help deter and prevent crime and violence at schools within the district.
The city and school district have had a School Resource Officer program since 2001.
