Bob Motzko led the SCSU Huskies hockey team for 13 seasons before taking over as the University of Minnesota Gophers’ head coach in 2018.

The crash also took the life of a 24-year-old man and seriously injured a 54-year-old man. Their names were not released.

Investigators say the crash happened around 11:30 on Saturday night near the 3100-block of North Shore Drive in Orono.

Police have released few details but stated that speed and alcohol appear to have contributed to the crash.

According to investigators, Mack Motzko was in the back seat of the vehicle at the time of the crash.

In the 2020-21 season, he played 14 games for the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League and 25 games for the New Mexico Ice Wolves of the North American Hockey League.

The accident remains under investigation.
