(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Area School District has proposed combining five sports between its two high schools.

District 742 is looking at having Apollo and Tech High School co-op for Girls Tennis, Girls Softball, Girls Basketball, Boys Baseball, and Boys Tennis.

The request has been sent to the Minnesota State High School League and is subject to approval.

According to the school district, co-op teams will allow the schools to maintain healthy and thriving activities.

District 742 says the move is needed to be competitive in conference play and maintain three teams in each sport.

“We are putting into place now strategies to revitalize and rebuild the programs so that hopefully in a couple of years we won’t need co-ops,” says Dr. Laurie Putnam, Assistant Principal of Secondary Education for St. Cloud Area Schools. “We are arranging transportation for after school high school activities and have hired middle level activities coordinators to help connect with elementary students and build the pipeline from a young age.”

The district already has six co-ops, including gymnastics, wrestling, Boys and Girls Hockey, and Boys and Girls Lacrosse.

The St. Cloud Area School District asks for public suggestions on unifying names and colors for the co-op teams.

Comments and suggestions are accepted until July 6.
