(KNSI) – The Minnesota crop harvest is making great strides toward completion. According to the latest USDA Crop Progress Report, the state’s 2026 harvest stands at 65% complete for corn and 93% complete for soybeans.
Minnesota Commissioner of Agriculture Thom Petersen is positive, saying, “In general, really good yields in the south and in the drought areas, some cases better than expected, but some cases, a little disappointing as well.” After early rain, Petersen expects much progress this week. The dry weather has helped with the harvest but has led to over a dozen combine fires. The U.S. Drought Monitor shows drought conditions over a majority of the state.
Prices for farmers have been a mixed bag, with costs still unsettled. Commissioner Petersen doesn’t see help yet with tariffs, saying, “The tariff situation has put some uncertainty, still, into the marketplace.” Diesel prices are up over 40 percent for those hauling grain and also a hardship for those transporting livestock and poultry.
Farm safety is on the commissioner’s mind, too. He encourages caution and patience while driving in rural areas.
