(KNSI) – With diesel prices averaging nearly three dollars per gallon more than one year ago, the effect on farmers is dramatic.
DFL Senator Aric Putnam is calling on Governor Walz for relief, either in terms of a special session or an executive order. He says, “Diesel right now is over six bucks a gallon. Last year, this time of year, it was about three-fifty. It’s already a hard time to be a farmer because of the drought, uncertainty that comes wit the tariffs, and the gas prices rising. We gotta do something to help out Minnesota farmers.”
Putnam, who is chair of the Senate Ag committee, sees the quickest route is for the governor to declare an emergency and issue an executive order to reduce the state’s 32 cent per gallon tax on diesel fuel. A similar measure has been enacted by North Dakota’s governor.
