(KNSI) – A garage and a vehicle were destroyed in an early morning blaze in Kimball.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says its dispatch center took a call at 4:14 a.m. Thursday about a building fire at 50 Cherry Street South. The caller said a neighbor’s garage was burning and the flames were spreading to nearby trees. A second garage in the area also caught fire.
Authorities say a juvenile who lives at the home was trying to get rid of a mattress by burning it in the garage. He believed he had put the fire out with water and went back inside. A short time later, the homeowner’s dog started barking. The juvenile looked outside and saw the garage fully engulfed in flames.
Everyone inside the house made it out and gathered across the street.
That garage is a total loss, along with a vehicle and the rest of the contents. Deputies determined the fire was accidental.
The Kimball Fire Department responded, with Watkins Fire providing mutual aid.
