St. Cloud School District 742 Adds ChatGPT For Teachers And Staff

(KNSI) – St. Cloud Area School District 742 is putting an artificial intelligence tool in the hands of its teachers and administrators.

The district announced Wednesday it has joined a national group of school districts working with OpenAI to deploy ChatGPT Edu. District 742 says the group spans 17 states.

The rollout covers teachers, staff and administrators only. The district says students will not have access to the platform.

According to the announcement, staff will be able to use the tool to draft lesson plans, adjust reading materials for different skill levels, build assessment rubrics and handle routine paperwork. The district says educator inputs and district data stay confidential, are not publicly accessible, and will not be used by OpenAI to train future versions of its models.

District 742 also introduced a set of rules for staff this week governing how the technology can be used. The framework requires employees to check AI-generated material for accuracy before it goes anywhere, confirm it fits the grade level and learning goal, watch for stereotypes or biased framing, and apply their own professional judgment as a final step.

The district describes teachers as the “human in the loop” and says the technology is meant to assist thinking rather than replace it.

The district has not said what the software costs or whether the school board approved the agreement.
