(KNSI) – A Colorado man was taken to the hospital early Saturday morning after a mortar-style firework exploded and hit him.

According to the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office, it received a report of a fireworks accident around 1:45 a.m. on July 4th at a residence off Emerald Road in Cushing Township, about three miles north of Randall.

Deputies say the 37-year-old man was holding a mortar-style firework in the air while lighting it when the device exploded from the bottom, sending a projectile into his side.

The man was rushed to St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls by Mayo Ambulance. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Randall Fire and Rescue and Mayo Ambulance.
