(KNSI) — For those looking to get away over the Independence Day holiday weekend, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources suggests checking out any of the 73 state parks and recreation areas.

Ann Pierce, director of the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division, says whether someone is looking for a day trip or a full weekend enjoying nature, there is something for everyone and they won’t have to look far.

“Most Minnesotans live within 30 miles of one of our 73 state parks and recreation areas.”

She adds that for someone seeking a quieter celebration, parks and recreation areas could be the perfect fit, since the use of fireworks is prohibited in these areas. “Visitors can relax, connect with nature and celebrate the holiday in a peaceful setting.”

For those looking to spend a day on the water, more than two dozen state parks and recreation areas have public swimming beaches.

Visitors can also find canoe, kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals at many state parks. Most rentals cost $15 for a half day and $25 for a full day, though prices at parks that contract with a private concessionaire may vary.

Visitors can also fish for free at most state parks, and many parks have equipment available to lend. Learn more about fishing opportunities at state parks by clicking here.

During the holiday weekend, two state parks will offer programs to help visitors learn angling skills:

Fishing Frenzy Friday is July 3rd at Lake Carlos State Park, about ten miles north of Alexandria. The event runs from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

I Can Fish! is at Whitewater State Park, about 30 miles southeast of Winona, on July 4th from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Registration is required. Do that by clicking here.

Campgrounds are filling up for the holiday weekend, but some spots are still available. Locations with 20 or more drive-in sites still open include Lake Bronson, Myre-Big Island, Sakatah Lake, Schoolcraft, St. Croix and Zippel Bay state parks. Lake Bronson State Park is the only location with multiple drive-in sites with electric hookups still available. Other state park lodgings, including camper cabins, yurts and guesthouses, are full.

Those interested in camping over the holiday weekend can check current campsite availability by clicking here. Users can also sign up for the “notify me” function on the reservation website to receive an email alert if a cancellation matches their search criteria.
