(KNSI) – St. Cloud-area residents running errands on Friday should plan ahead, as many government offices, banks and other services will be closed for Juneteenth.

June 19th has been a federal holiday since 2021, and Minnesota made it a permanent state holiday in 2023. The day marks the moment in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Local government offices will be closed across the area and reopen on Monday.

That includes St. Cloud, Sartell, Sauk Rapids and Waite Park city offices, along with Stearns, Benton and Sherburne county offices. Because it is both a federal and a state holiday, other government services will follow suit. Federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration, will be closed, along with state offices and the courts.

The U.S. Postal Service observes the holiday, so there will be no regular mail delivery, and post offices will be closed. On the flip side, UPS and FedEx will run normal pickup and delivery, and their store locations will be open.

St. Cloud-based Falcon National Bank is closed for the federal holiday, as it has been since the day was recognized in 2021. Most other banks follow the Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule and are expected to be closed as well, though ATMs and online banking remain available. The markets are also dark, with the New York Stock Exchange closed Friday.
All 32 branches of the Great River Regional Library, including the St. Cloud, Sartell and Sauk Rapids locations, are closed Friday for the holiday.

St. Cloud Metro Bus administrative offices are closed, but transit service generally runs on a normal or adjusted holiday schedule. Riders should confirm Friday times in the Transit app or at ridemetrobus.com.
Public schools are out for the summer.

On the open side, most grocery stores, malls and retailers are expected to operate normally, and many pharmacies will be open, though some may keep reduced holiday hours. Emergency services are not affected.
