(KNSI) — Minnesota’s Cold Weather Rule ends at midnight April 30th, meaning utilities can resume disconnections for customers who are behind on their bills.

The rule protects residential customers from disconnections of electric or gas service when they affect their primary heating source, but it is not an excuse to skip paying the bill.

“We understand that many people right now are feeling financial pressures in various areas of their lives,” said Jody Allison, Xcel Energy vice president of Customer Experience Operations and Transformation. “It’s our priority to work with those in need and prevent disconnections wherever possible. Please reach out to us and learn about the bill assistance options available.”

The Minnesota Energy Assistance Program pays an average of $500 toward heating and power costs for eligible households and can also help cover emergency expenses, such as repairing or replacing a broken furnace. Income-eligible customers may also qualify for energy efficiency and conservation programs through their utility provider.

Customers who need help can set up a payment arrangement by contacting their utility provider directly.

The Public Utilities Commission has staff with information to help navigate the cold weather rule at 1-800-657-3782 or online.

For those who are behind or struggling to catch up on heating bills can sign up for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as the Minnesota Energy Assistance Program, through Tri-Cap in Waite Park.
