(KNSI) — Tuesday is the last day to fill out a survey regarding a potential bow hunting ordinance within the City of Sartell.

The ordinance would allow regulated bow hunting within city limits, subject to clearly defined safety and permitting requirements. It is intended to promote public safety, responsible wildlife management and respect for neighborhoods while also complying with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ rules.

Residents have asked the city to help manage the urban deer population with responsible control measures to help alleviate the dangers surrounding car/deer crashes, property damage and damage to natural areas. The city says bow hunting is a low-risk activity when properly regulated and is commonly used by cities to manage wildlife on larger plots of land while also allowing for recreational opportunities in the community.

Some of the regulations being considered include hunting only on qualifying properties with a minimum size of five acres. There would be no hunting allowed on city-owned properties, including parks and trails; school district-owned property; areas with active commercial businesses; and areas zoned for high-density residential homes.

The Police Chief or someone else designated to oversee the program would be allowed to deny, condition or revoke permits. A minimum safety distance would be implemented near homes, roads and property lines. State hunting laws would also apply. Hunters and landowners would assume all liability.

City officials say the survey takes about two minutes. Access it by clicking here.
