(KNSI) – Governor Tim Walz has activated the Minnesota National Guard to support local law enforcement after a shooting involving federal immigration enforcement agents in south Minneapolis.
The governor signed the executive order on Thursday, which allows the National Guard to protect critical infrastructure and assist law enforcement as needed. The Guard will serve in a support role, focusing on protecting property and allowing police to concentrate on community safety and investigations.
“Minnesotans have met this moment. Thousands of people have peacefully made their voices heard,” Governor Walz said. “We have every reason to believe that peace will hold.”
In addition to the National Guard, the Minnesota State Patrol has deployed 85 members of its Mobile Response Team to support law enforcement efforts in the Twin Cities.
The Guard remains on standby to help maintain public safety and ensure peaceful demonstrations can continue. State officials say the coordinated response is designed to provide additional resources while protecting residents’ freedom of speech.
