(KNSI) — A fire in Sauk Centre Township Tuesday afternoon is believed to have started due to a cigarette butt thrown from a passing vehicle.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says they received several calls around 3:45 reporting a fire in the west ditch of Highway 71, just south of the intersection with County Road 29. Deputies, along with the Sauk Centre Fire Department, were able to get the fire out quickly.
Police say about a quarter of an acre of ditch burned before the fire was extinguished.
Before this week, central Minnesota has seen little rainfall, and there are burning restrictions throughout the state due to the tinder dry conditions.
