(KNSI) – Minnesota will say goodbye this week to a state trooper who drowned while swimming last month in South Dakota.
Visitation for trooper Mollie McClure is scheduled for Monday, with a Tuesday morning funeral. Both the visitation and service will take place at Jackson County Central High School, her alma mater. McClure’s visitation will run from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday. There will also be an hour visitation before the funeral on Tuesday morning. The service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
According to the Day County Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday, June 29th, McClure had been boating on the northeast part of Waubay Lake when she went into the water and, at some point, wasn’t able to keep swimming. She went underwater before she could be saved. Investigators are still looking into the incident and are trying to figure out why McClure was unable to stay above water; however, no criminal charges have been filed, and all those involved are cooperating with police.
McClure joined the State Patrol in October 2021. In June 2023, she gained national attention when a video of her rescuing a fawn trapped in a fence near Avon went viral.
According to a press release, McClure made significant contributions throughout her career. She trained academy cadets, served as a peer counselor, and took part in a workgroup aimed at increasing the number of female troopers. She was also a beloved presence at recruiting events, known for her ability to connect with people.
Before dying at only 33 years old, McClure had been living in St. Joseph with her boyfriend and two pets. She was a valued member of the St. Cloud MSP district post, having worked at State Farm Insurance before deciding to go into law enforcement like her brother.
She was a proud graduate of the University of Minnesota. The family is asking that any memorials made in her name be donated to the U’s Center for Lung Science and Health Fund.
