(KNSI) – The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for central Minnesota, effective from noon Saturday through 9:00 p.m. Sunday, as dangerously hot conditions are expected to grip the region.
Heat index values are forecast to reach between 105 and 110 degrees across Stearns, Benton, Sherburne, and Wright Counties. Making conditions even more dangerous, low temperatures on Saturday night will only drop to the mid-70s to the lower 80s, providing minimal relief from the oppressive heat.
The extreme heat warning represents the highest level of heat alert issued by the National Weather Service, reserved for conditions that pose a significant threat to public health and safety. The lack of nighttime cooling is particularly concerning, as it prevents the body from recovering from daytime heat stress.
Officials are urging residents to drink plenty of water throughout the day, remain in air-conditioned spaces when possible, stay indoors during peak heat hours, monitor the well-being of relatives, neighbors, and vulnerable friends, and never leave children or pets in vehicles.
For those who must spend time outdoors, wearing lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas, and recognize the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion, including heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, headache, and dizziness. Heat stroke, a more serious condition, may present with high body temperature, altered mental state, hot and dry skin, and rapid pulse. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
