(KNSI) – St. Cloud has quickly become the gold standard for girls’ flag football in the sport’s first year of competition.

The Tech Tigers finished the regular season at 6-2 and are the top seed in the District 1 Gold Division. This Sunday, the team will open the playoffs against the number four team from the District 1 Purple Division, Elk River.

The Tigers have roared offensively, scoring over 40 touchdowns so far. Sophomore quarterback Sydney Shamla completed 57.2% of her passes for 1,902 yards with a sterling touchdown-to-interception ratio of 37 to 11. Shamla’s favorite target was Reese Ruska, who snagged 77 receptions at nearly 11 yards per catch.

Shamla and Ruska were two-way stars. They both finished in the top three on the team in tackles and were tied with nine interceptions each.

The inaugural flag football season consisted of four doubleheaders played on Sundays in April and May. Tech High School will host the first round playoffs as they try to get to the championships at the TCO Performance Center. The league is being put on thanks to a grant from the Minnesota Vikings. Over 50 teams are competing statewide.

Tech’s biggest competition locally comes from Melrose, which finished 7-1 overall. The teams split a pair of games during the regular season.
