(KNSI) – The St. Cloud State University Athletic Department announced the death of longtime football coach Noel Martin on Tuesday.

Martin paced the sidelines for the Huskies from 1983 to 1998, amassing a 91-81 career record. With the program ending about five years ago, Martin wound up being the winningest coach in the school’s history. Martin’s tenure was known for its stability. The team was at or above .500 in 10 of the 16 years under his leadership, even after moving into the tough North Central Conference.

Martin’s 1989 team won the NCC championship and got to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. There were two Harlon Hill finalists, 16 All-Americans, and 43 All-Conference players to don the red and black in that time period, as well.

Martin excelled himself on the field. He played for the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Big 8 Conference. Martin was on the Big Red in 1962, which featured the first sold-out game in a streak that lasts to this day at Memorial Stadium.

A ceremony remembering Coach Martin will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Becker on December 6th at 11:00 a.m.
