(KNSI) — St. Cloud State University has been awarded $50,000 in grants for the Minnesota Office of Higher Education’s statewide Hunger Free Campus initiative.
The initiative is aimed at addressing food insecurity across the colleges and universities.
The two $25,000 grants will help out the Huskies Food Pantry. During the 2023-24 academic year, the pantry served nearly 10,000 visits and distributed over 119,000 pounds of food to almost 2,300 students. SCSU was one of 24 public and private campuses awarded a share of over $400,000 in Hunger Free Campus grants.
The pantry opened in 2020 and was remodeled in 2022 to add two refrigerators and two freezers to offer fresh and frozen foods for the first time.
“For too many students, food insecurity is a daily concern,” said OHE Commissioner Dennis Olson. “This initiative provides those students with the nutrition they need to focus on their studies and complete their programs. I look forward to a day when every campus in the state is hunger free.”
