(KNSI) — St. Cloud Area School District Superintendent Dr. Laurie Putnam has been named the 2025 state Superintendent of the Year.

The Minnesota Association of School Administrators chose the head of District 742 chose her based on her leadership in learning, communication, professionalism, and community engagement.

A press release from MASA explains that Dr. Putnam has led significant efforts to address inequities within St. Cloud Area Schools, emphasizing diversity in the workforce. Under her leadership, the district has surpassed state and regional averages in staff diversity, with 8.5% of teachers and 21.6% of administrators identifying as people of color. Additionally, her focus on representation has fostered a more inclusive environment, enhancing student engagement, attendance, and academic performance.

Dr. Putnam was also selected for her fiscal responsibility. She secured over $7 million in grants to launch initiatives like Full-Service Community Schools and to enhance student safety through GPS mapping and anonymous safety reporting systems. Additionally, grant funding has supported programs for aspiring special education teachers and paraprofessionals seeking teaching credentials.

The panel was also impressed with the professionalism and community involvement she brings to the table by adhering to her principles of “No Noise” and “Be About It, Don’t Talk About It.” MASA says it makes sure the district remains focused on student needs, minimizing distractions from external agendas. Putnam was hailed for building relationships with the school board, community organizations, and local legislators. That has led to expanded preschool access and career pathway programs.

Dr. Putnam has served as superintendent of St. Cloud Area Schools since 2022. She previously held several leadership roles within the district, including assistant superintendent for secondary schools, principal of Kennedy Community School, and assistant principal of South Junior High School. Dr. Putnam began her career in St. Cloud Area Schools in 2009 as a counselor at South Junior High.

The award opens the door for her to be named as National Superintendent of the Year.
