(KNSI) – A press conference is set for 12:15 Thursday afternoon as Governor Tim Walz reveals the next steps in the state’s vaccination plan.
Reports say that Governor Walz will open up vaccine eligibility to more people after 70 percent of the state’s over 65 population is vaccinated. As of Wednesday, that number was around 43%. Many criticized the state’s initial rollout as early numbers showed high numbers of people between the ages of 18 and 49 had been vaccinated before those over the age of 65. Out of the state’s 480,845 cases, 13.3%, or 64,323, are over 65. Since the pandemic began, 6,443 people have died from COVID-19 related complications. 62% of them have been in long-term care or assisted living facilities, and 89% of deaths are over 65.
The priority 1A group was healthcare workers and staff at long term care or assisted living facilities, with many of them being on the younger side. Vaccine data from the state Wednesday showed that 364,331 over the age of 65 have had at least one dose, compared with 254,137 of those 18 to 49.
The state hopes to reach the 70% mark by the end of March.
