(KNSI) – Reading with her young children inspired a western Stearns County woman to become an author herself.

Juli Bohmer says she went the publisher route with her new book, “The Strange Thing Forest.” She knew she was ready to submit the manuscript when her son gave it two thumbs up.

“He was actually six when I read it to him. And at the end, [I] asked him what he thought of the book, and he said, “I love it!” And I had never heard that response from him before, so it was just really great to see such a positive reaction.”

Using a publisher takes years, and Bohmer has been busy in the meantime. She has self-produced two counting books for kids ages two to four. “The Strange Thing Forest” was just released last month. Bohmer will be at the St. Cloud Barnes and Noble this Saturday to read it from 11:00 a.m. to noon.

Bohmer says she anticipates moving into chapter books soon to continue writing for her own kids. “I’m expecting to write chapter books in the years coming as my children are getting older. I do have six children’s books ready to go for the four to eight age group as well, which I would like to pursue for the time being.”

The publisher handled the art in “The Strange Thing Forest.” Bohmer says it was fun to compare her vision when writing the book to what the illustrator created. She likens it to an author who watches their book get turned into a movie.
