(KNSI) – A local veterinary clinic says not everything you set out on the Thanksgiving table for friends and family is appropriate for your pets.

If you are slipping some holiday table scraps to your favorite four-legged buddies, Granite City Pet Hospital tells KNSI News to make sure it is contained to apples, carrots, celery, corn (without the cob), green beans, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and skinless turkey.

Cats and dogs should never be given ham because of its high sodium content. Turkey is alright as long as it is skinless. Turkey bones are a choking hazard and should be separated and kept up high. The bones have the potential to splinter, which may tear an animal’s intestinal wall.

Other staples to keep to yourself include garlic, grapes, hot dish, leeks, onions, and stuffing. They are all potentially toxic, especially to smaller breeds.

The American Kennel Club says to avoid feeding pets foods containing or prepared in ingredients with a lot of fat, salt, and sugar. Desserts with chocolate or dairy are also dangerous.
