(KNSI) — Energy companies are reminding ratepayers there is help for heating costs as subzero temperatures are settling in over central Minnesota, and winter is just getting started.
Under Minnesota’s Cold Weather Rule, customers who are having trouble affording their heating bills can set up a payment plan with their utility to prevent disconnection. There are also programs such as the Energy Assistance Program. Federal funds are used to help pay for home heating costs and system repairs for income eligible households.
Locally, Tri-Cap in Waite Park can help pay up to $2,000 for heat, power and water costs or to repair or replace a broken heat source. Some customers can also qualify for crisis help.
The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission can help navigate the cold weather rule at 1-800-657-3782. They can also be reached online by clicking here. For help through Tri-Cap, click here.
