(KNSI) – Officials have snuffed out the fuse on a popular fireworks show set for Saturday night during BoniFest in Cold Spring.

Fire chief Dan Weber made the call on Monday due to severe and extreme drought in Stearns County, according to Cold Spring City Administrator Kris Dockendorf. The fire chief warned the city council last month the show could be called off because of the dry weather.

It’s the second time in recent years that fireworks have been called off for the event. Officials made an identical decision in 2021 for the same reason.

BoniFest is an annual two-day celebration supporting the St. Boniface Parish in Cold Spring. Events start on Saturday with an outdoor polka mass at 5 p.m. followed by food, drinks, games and inflatables. The Fabulous Armadillos will be on stage from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m.

BoniFest continues with the parade on Sunday at 10 a.m., a beanbag tournament, live music, a quilt auction, a raffle drawing and a car raffle. The weekend will end with the dedication of the Officer Tom Decker memorial in front of the police department at 5:00 p.m. Decker was a part of the Cold Spring Police Department when he was shot to death responding to a call for a welfare check on a man in November 2012.
