(KNSI) – CentraCare-St. Cloud Hospital says new technology can diagnose lung cancer earlier, potentially saving lives.
Staff uses a robot to assist them with a bronchoscopy, which biopsies a potentially cancerous spot on the lungs in a minimally-invasive fashion. The Ion system features an ultra-thin catheter that is guided with extra precision not possible by hand. It allows doctors to create a treatment plan in only a couple of hours after the procedure and the patient can recover quickly with few side effects.
Another benefit is the new system can target nodules, the first stage of cancer. CentraCare says a robotic bronchoscopy is advanced care available to central Minnesotans in their own community, without having to drive to the Twin Cities or Rochester.
The hospital debuted the technology on April 11th and it has already been used to find cancer on 18 patients.
