(KNSI) – With demand for assistance at local food shelves up, this Saturday’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is coming at a time when it is needed most.

The National Association of Letter Carriers collects over 70 million pounds of fruit, pasta, soups, vegetables, and more each spring with the initiative. In the St. Cloud area, it is sponsored by Bernick’s and Short Stop and benefits the Catholic Charities and Salvation Army food shelves.

Helping is easy. On Saturday, just set out cans and other nonperishable food items next to your mailbox in a plastic bag. When you get your letters delivered for the day, the donations will be picked up.

Your assistance is greatly needed. Minnesota food shelves saw record demand last year, with over 5.5 million visits statewide. Estimates suggest roughly 20% of people rely on food donations.
