(KNSI) – Lifeguards in central Minnesota are enjoying their day in the sun.

The City of St. Cloud is offering up to $20 an hour for help this summer to staff its wading pools. The temporary, seasonal position offers between 10 and 39 hours per week. Lifeguards will be at their stations from June 13th to August 13th. This will be the first time St. Cloud will have kids splishing and splashing at a city park since before COVID.

Other area cities are having to adjust their compensation as well. Sartell’s council approved its annual agreement with the YMCA at Monday’s meeting. It will cost 20% more this year, or a $3,000 increase, for lifeguards at Celebration Park.

Even smaller cities like Foley are offering at least $14 per hour for the position. Lifeguards have seen a persistent shortage dating back years as the going wage for other summer and entry-level jobs began to creep up. That accelerated coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic with common starting wages at fast food restaurants and retailers now around $15 per hour.
