(KNSI) – The St. Cloud Fire Department has new battery-powered tools that help you reach people trapped inside vehicles as quickly as possible after a bad accident.
The purchase was announced Tuesday on Facebook by Clarey’s Safety Equipment of Rochester, which sells the devices manufactured in Ohio by Genesis Rescue Tools. St. Cloud Professional Firefighters Local 464 says you get more mobility than the traditional type powered by a portable generator. That can help save lives.
There are three components to the Jaws of Life. The spreader has pincer-like arms that operate like a can opener to tear metal or expand an already existing hole. A cutter snaps right through door posts and other sturdy parts of the vehicle. A ram is used to prop open collapsed dashboards or the like to free up space for a crash victim to escape the car.
Clarey’s Safety Equipment says the tools are crucial to perform during times of crisis.
