(KNSI) – With the end of open enrollment for Minnesota’s healthcare exchange less than a week away, officials say scams are rampant.
When someone uses Google to search for MNsure, the first results are paid ads designed to look like the official site. Instead, they are dummy pages that will collect information from unsuspecting people, including your age, financial data, and Social Security number. Pay close attention to the URL when you are redirected to a site. Make sure it reads MNSure.org.
Another tip to avoid being defrauded is to be leery of unsolicited phone calls. MNsure brokers do not cold call potential customers and they never demand immediate payment to enroll someone into the program. The exchange allows you to browse options and get a free cost estimate anonymously without providing a telephone number. If you use another service that could result in you ending up on a contact list.
Lastly, officials say you should buy comprehensive protection, guaranteed in every MNsure plan, but not when you use a private company.
