Bello Cucina Italian Steakhouse in St. Joseph Closing After 14 Years

(KNSI) – A longtime staple of the central Minnesota dining scene is closing its doors as the owner announces his retirement.

In a statement on the Bello Cucina Italian Steakhouse Facebook page, owner Jason Mueller says the time has come for him to hang up his apron and begin a new chapter in life.

“To the wonderful people of Minnesota, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your friendship, loyalty, and unwavering support throughout the years.

“As a chef, I have always believed that great food is about more than what is served on a plate. It’s about bringing people together, creating memories, sharing laughter, and celebrating life’s special moments.

“You welcomed us into your lives, trusted us with your celebrations, and allowed us to become part of your families. For that, I will be forever grateful.”

Bello Cucina opened in the Millstream Shops in St. Joseph 14 years ago. After a tour in the Marine Corps and a dream of becoming a police officer that was dashed by injury, Mueller was inspired by his grandmother to enter the restaurant business.

In 2024, Mueller was a finalist in a Taste of Home magazine competition to be named Carla Hall’s Favorite Chef. At that time, he told KNSI News he was grateful for the backing he has received. “I’ve had a lot of support. A lot of friends and family that have jumped in, staff that takes pride in the restaurant we have here, and former employees that believe in what we do and what I’ve done over my career for the past 30 years.”

Bello Cucina is a concept that Mueller pioneered and refined in Minnesota. At one point, it was a chain with six locations. He scaled back operations after a heart attack he believes was linked to the stress of managing multiple restaurants. The St. Joseph location is the last one standing.

While there is no firm date, doors will close by the end of the year.
