(KNSI) – Minnesota livestock and specialty crop farmers can now submit applications for drought relief. Each farmer can receive up to $7,500 related to unexpected expenses from the extremely dry conditions between July 19, 2021, and January 1, 2002.
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture lists eligible costs as the following for specialty crop farmers: “water handling equipment; water hauling; wells; irrigation equipment; replacement plants, seeds, or seedlings; additional hired labor; farmers’ market fees for canceled markets; and more.”
For livestock farmers: “water-related expenses; feed-related expenses; custom bailing; equipment rental; livestock transportation; livestock pond dredging; cover crop, pasture, or forage replanting; fencing; grazing rights; additional hired labor; and more.”
Every Central Minnesota county qualifies for the program. The deadline is July 6th if submitted online, which is the preferred method. Paperwork sent in by mail must be received by July 12th.
