(KNSI) – Sartell High School’s boys’ baseball team made the most of a narrow window in between rounds of severe weather Thursday. The Sabres moved quickly to jump ahead of the Saint Cloud Area Crush. They played good defense and rode a two-hit shutout from Tory Lund to wrap up a 9-0 win before tornado sirens began to sound through the city.
With the score tied 0-0, Sartell’s Austin Henrichs led off the bottom of the first with a ground ball single that scooted through the hole between third and shortstop. He was at third with two out when Gavan Schulte walked. Three consecutive hits plated four runs against Crush starter Hank Bulson. Steven Brinkerhoff doubled into left near the foul pole. Blake Haus hit a line drive into the gap in left center driving in two. Carson Gross sent a ground ball back through the box.
Sartell pushed across another five in the fifth as reliever Truman Toenjes began to tire. He came in for Bulson in the bottom of the second. Meanwhile, the Sabres got another sterling pitching effort. Lund walked three and hit a batter, all in the final couple innings, but otherwise was stellar. He battled out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh for a complete game shutout. On Tuesday, Wesley Johnson pitched five scoreless innings against Brainerd.
The win gets the Sabres to 5-5 in the Central Lakes Conference. Saint Cloud falls to 3-7.
