(KNSI) – Ukraine is famed for its wheat crop. The war with Russia has impacted the commodity’s futures values. The near-month contract touched record highs just weeks ago. Corn has risen in sympathy.
Extension Educator Nathan Drewitz says farmers locally aren’t modifying plantings for the upcoming season, even with the wild price swings.
“Most of those changes were made already back last year, towards the end of November, [or] December if they were going to plant more corn. Changes to crop rotations are not being planned at this point.”
Adding to calmness locally is the fact that snow came almost immediately after the first freeze as winter settled in. Drewitz says frost is negligible. Dry conditions from last year have largely disappeared as well.
“For the most part, we have received quite a bit of snowfall and rain. We’re really not in a major drought at this point.”
Seeds are expected to be in the ground by the end of April.
