NCHC Issues Statement on Controversial End to SCSU Game

(KNSI) – College hockey officials have issued an official statement on a controversial no-call at the end of the St. Cloud State University overtime game against the University of Minnesota during homecoming.

It looked like Huskies Defenseman Nick Perbix was hooked by Gopher Blake McLaughlin, but the referees didn’t blow the whistle. The puck was behind the SCSU net when McLaughlin came up behind him and put a stick on Perbix’s body. Perbix fell to the ice as McLaughlin took possession of the puck.

McLaughlin took the puck up ice and passed it to Sammy Walker, who scored the gaming-winning goal 36 seconds into overtime. The goal gave the Gophers a 4-3 win over the SCSU Huskies.

According to a press release, “The National Collegiate Hockey Conference has determined a minor penalty or penalties should have been issued on the sequence immediately leading up to the game-winning goal in overtime during the University of Minnesota-St. Cloud Stae contest. Disciplinary action for any game officials will be handled internally by the conference office.”

The statement also admonished the behavior of some SCSU fans at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Some were throwing food, drinks, and other items onto the ice after the game.
